Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. Col 3:1-11
The death and resurrection of Christ is symbolic to our walk with him. Before we accepted him as our personal savior we were all lost in sin. Christ died to save us from that sin, He offered a perfect sacrifice for all of us. However, when we chose salvation, there are things that must change. The sins of the past must be left at the past and this is possible with the help of the Holy Spirit.
One of the key things that needs to change is where our focus is. The word of God urges us to set our minds on things above and not on earthly things. The only way to leave the past behind is by switching our focus. You can sit in a ‘matatu’ for hours simply because you know where you are headed. What is it that pushes you in this journey of Christianity, focus on it,and that factor is Christ.
It might not happen overnight, but it can happen. In continuous prayers and always keeping focus on things of God, we eventually start shedding off things that had entangle us to sin. This world will eventually pass away but the word of God will never pass away. As we strive to make money, launch businesses, study and get good grades, invests etc., let our ultimate focus be on things above. Remember it is He who gives us the ability to make wealth. No matter where you are in life today, let the focus be on Christ. May the Holy Spirit keep us in check, may He remind us when we are losing focus. Focus on things above; where Christ is.
