Rising from the Ashes: Embracing Farming and Self-Employment

Introduction:

In 2012, filled with dreams of a prosperous future, I embarked on a journey to pursue a degree in actuarial science at Moi University in Kenya. Like many other bright students, I believed that this field held the promise of a successful and fulfilling career. However, the harsh reality soon set in, as the limited job opportunities in the actuarial science industry took their toll on students' mental health. Witnessing this wave of depression and disillusionment, I resolved to take matters into my own hands. In 2019, I enrolled at the University of Nairobi for a business course, determined to carve a new path for myself in the agricultural realm.

The False Hope and Victimization:

After many years of education and hard work, the lack of job prospects in the actuarial science field left me and many other bright students disheartened. We had invested our time, energy, and financial resources into pursuing a career that seemed promising at the outset. However, as the job market failed to meet our expectations, we found ourselves drowning in a sea of despair and hopelessness. The constant barrage of rejection letters and the realization that our dreams were slipping away left us feeling victimized by a system that had seemingly failed us.

A Turning Point:

Refusing to succumb to the negativity and frustration, I decided to take control of my own destiny. In 2019, I made the bold step of enrolling in a business course at the University of Nairobi. It was there that I discovered my true passion for entrepreneurship and the potential of the agricultural sector in Kenya. I became captivated by the idea of starting my own farming enterprise that would encompass various agricultural-related fields.

Embracing Farming and Self-Employment:

Armed with newfound knowledge and an unwavering determination, I dove headfirst into the world of farming and self-employment. I saw this as an opportunity to not only create a sustainable livelihood for myself but also contribute to the development of the agricultural industry in Kenya. I knew it would not be an easy journey, but my belief in the potential of the agricultural sector fueled my resilience.

I started my farming enterprise with a focus on diversification, exploring various agricultural areas such as crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and value-added processing. Through the careful application of the business knowledge I had acquired, I aimed to create a holistic and sustainable farming model. By leveraging innovative technologies and adopting sustainable farming practices, I aimed to maximize productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

Conclusion:

Leaving behind the false hope and victimization of the actuarial science field, I found solace and renewed hope in the agricultural sector. My decision to embrace farming and self-employment has transformed my life, allowing me to find fulfillment and success on my own terms. While the journey has not been without its obstacles, I am determined to create a thriving enterprise that not only supports me but also contributes to the growth and progress of the agricultural sector in Kenya.
