The Kenyan government has imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei settlement following days of refugee-led demonstrations.
According to a UNHCR letter dated March 3, 2025, the curfew, enforced due to security concerns, took effect on Monday. It restricts movement between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., prohibiting entry or exit from the camps during those hours.
The statement warns that violators will face detention and referral to authorities. However, exceptions apply to medical emergencies, security personnel, health workers, and other essential service providers.
Camp chairperson Abraham Machiek said on Monday, police shot and injured five demonstrators after protestors stormed the UNHCR compound demanding that the UN World Food Programme reverse its decision to reduce food aid provisions.
