As of today, Monday, March 31, 2025, the latest news out of Kakuma, Kenya, centers on the ongoing challenges faced by the Kakuma refugee camp following the devastating Myanmar-Thailand earthquake and broader regional dynamics. Here’s what’s happening:

Earthquake Relief Efforts: While Kakuma itself wasn’t directly hit by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Southeast Asia on March 28, the global humanitarian response has indirectly impacted the camp. With international aid agencies stretched thin responding to the crisis (over 1,600 deaths reported so far), resources for Kakuma’s roughly 302,372 refugees as of February 2025 have been under strain. Earlier this month, on March 5, clashes between refugees and Kenyan police erupted after food rations were cut due to a U.S. aid freeze, wiping out half of the World Food Programme’s budget. At least four refugees and one local official were injured, with tear gas deployed to disperse protests at the UNHCR office. The situation underscores ongoing tensions over dwindling aid.

Integration Under the Shirika Plan: Kenya’s government is pushing forward with the Shirika Plan, approved by the Cabinet, to transition Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps into integrated settlements by November 2025. As of late March, reports indicate Kakuma has been gazetted as a municipality, aiming to grant refugees rights akin to Kenyans—like access to education, employment, and property ownership. However, the camp remains congested, with around 3,000 new arrivals monthly, exacerbating resource shortages and complicating the transition.

Educational Highlights: Amid these challenges, a positive note emerged with Musin Mahjub Ismael, a refugee from Kakuma, scoring a B plain in the 2024 KCSE exams at Nguluni Secondary School. His success, reported on March 30, highlights resilience within the camp’s community despite adversity.

The Bitcoin community’s efforts to aid Myanmar and Thailand (e.g., CZ’s 1,000 BNB pledge) haven’t directly targeted Kakuma, but the crypto-driven relief model could inspire similar initiatives here, given the camp’s funding woes. The situation remains fluid, with local and global factors intertwining.
