WorkHealth Jersey is pleased to see the Government of Jersey’s Management of Health & Safety at Work: Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) now issued by the Health and Safety Inspectorate (HSI), providing clearer guidance on employers’ duties — including health surveillance for workers.

Under Jersey health and safety law, employers must take reasonably practicable measures to protect the health of their employees. This includes establishing health surveillance where workers are exposed to hazards that could cause identifiable health effects and where valid techniques exist to detect early signs of harm. Health surveillance is required even when control measures are in place if there is residual risk to health such as exposure to noise, vibration, or hazardous substances.

This guidance supports employers in understanding what good occupational health practice looks like and in meeting their legal obligations to prevent work-related ill health.

WorkHealth Jersey is an independent Occupational Health provider, led by our Medical Director Dr. Chris Edmond. Our team delivers health surveillance and health monitoring services across all industries, including wellbeing checks for office-based staff and surveillance for safety-critical roles.

You manage a small sales team, and you’ve noticed a change in one of your team members. They’ve been tearful at work and haven’t been reaching his sales targets.

Here’s what they say:

I’ve had depression before, and I think it’s coming back. My mood has been so low. The last thing I want to do is make sales calls. But I don’t want to go off sick. Coming into work is one of the only ways I see other people and get out of the house.

What do you do next?

1. Contact your HR team, if you have one.
2. Look at providing an occupational health referral with WorkHealth Jersey.
3. Gain consent from the employee to attend an occupational health referral.
4. Help identify stressors with the employee.
5. Place your referral.
6. Once the referral appointment is complete, work through the recommendations made by WorkHealth Jersey.
