Today Venice counts around 400 bridges connecting the islands of the lagoon — some say 391, others up to 446 depending on how they are measured.
The first bridges in Venice were very simple. At the beginning they were nothing more than wooden planks laid from one side of a canal to the other. Over time they became stronger wooden structures, until many of them were eventually rebuilt in stone, giving Venice the elegant bridges we see today.
For centuries, however, Rialto remained the only bridge crossing the Grand Canal. Anyone who needed to cross the canal far from Rialto had to take a traghetto gondola, a simple gondola ferry that carried passengers from one bank to the other for a small coin.
Only in the 19th century, when Venice was connected to the mainland by railway, were two more bridges built across the Grand Canal to improve pedestrian movement: Ponte degli Scalzi, near the railway station, and Ponte dell’Accademia, close to the famous art galleries.
Today walking through Venice still means crossing bridge after bridge — discovering the city step by step.

What is a Venetian cicchetto?
The word comes from Latin and means “a small quantity.” But in Venice, it means much more. A cicchetto is the perfect companion to a glass of local wine — a small bite, simple or refined, enjoyed standing at the counter of a bacaro. Traditionally, they were humble:
polenta with baccalà, boiled egg, sarde in saor. Today, many bacari reinterpret them — seasonal vegetables, fresh seafood, creative combinations. Small, beautiful, delicious.
