🇬🇧 SCAFFOLDS: what they are, synthesis of the fabric and materials.

🔹Scaffolds are artificial structures capable of supporting the three-dimensional growth of a fabric.

• They allow cell adhesion and migration
• They provide nourishment to the cells
• They perform biological and mechanical functions.
They act as a "substitute" for the physiological Extracellular Matrix.

🔹Properties:

• Degree of porosity suitable for cell growth and the supply of nutrients
• Biocompatibility and bioabsorbability, with a degradation rate compatible with the growth rate of the tissue
• Large surface area to promote adhesion, proliferation and differentiation
• Mechanical properties similar to the natural fabric to be replaced.

🔹The process of synthesis of a tissue can be described by the succession of 6 phases:

• Fabrication of a scaffold with suitable properties
• Insemination of cells under static conditions on a Petri dish
• Growth of a pre-tissue in dynamic rotating culture
• Growth of mature tissue in a physiological environment → bioreactor
• Surgical transplant
• Assimilation of artificial tissue.

⚡ ELECTRICAL HAZARDS IN HEALTHCARE AND MEDICAL FACILITIES
The use or the simple presence of electricity is associated with a risk for the safety of people, called ELECTRICAL RISK.
The main electrical accidents, which can occur anywhere, are:
• Macroshock due to direct contact
• Macroshock due to indirect contact
Microshocking is also possible in some hospital rooms.

🔸Macroshock due to direct contact: It can occur when a person comes into contact with the active phase of the electrical network, through a part of the electrical system that normally operates at a high voltage . For example when we get shocked if we change a light bulb without "turning off the power".
Precautions:
• Adequate staff training
• Use of the isolation transformer
• Use of the differential switch (circuit breaker)

🔸 Macroshock due to indirect contact: It can occur when the subject touches a part of the system that is NOT normally live, but has become so due to a fault.
Precautions:
• Ground all accessible metal parts → grounding
• Insert an earth leakage current limiter: magnetothermic and differential switches

🔸Microshock: The possible injured are only those patients undergoing cardiac catheterization or examinations that require probes in the heart area.
Currents of the order of 100-150 µA are sufficient to cause ventricular fibrillation.
Precautions:
• Use CF type instruments, which limit leakage currents
• Equalize the potential of all metal masses in the patient space
