Darkmatter è una delle opere più importanti della coreografa e performer Cherish Menzo, presentata nel 2022 come seguito ideale del suo precedente lavoro, Jezebel. È una performance di danza contemporanea che mescola hip-hop, fantascienza, afrofuturismo, horror e arti visive per interrogare il modo in cui i corpi neri vengono rappresentati e percepiti nella cultura contemporanea.

La scena si apre con due figure enigmatiche, i volti nascosti da maschere riflettenti. Una cosparge l'altra di un liquido nero, in un'atmosfera che ricorda un rituale o un racconto post-apocalittico. Nel corso dell’azione performativa i corpi sembrano trasformarsi continuamente: diventano creature aliene, mostri, fantasmi, immagini che sfuggono a qualsiasi identificazione immediata.

Uno degli aspetti più interessanti è il modo in cui Menzo traduce in movimento la tecnica musicale del "chopped and screwed", sviluppata nella scena hip hop di Houston attorno a Dj Screw. In questa tecnica la musica viene rallentata e frammentata con tagli e scratch; allo stesso modo, in Darkmatter i gesti, i tempi e le identità vengono rallentati, spezzati e deformati. Il risultato è una sensazione di sospensione, come se il tempo stesso funzionasse diversamente, mentre i corpi dei performer emergono da un paesaggio sonoro denso e stratificato creando un’atmosfera inquietante e ipnotica.

Darkmatter, by Cherish Menzo

Darkmatter is one of choreographer and performer Cherish Menzo's most important works, presented in 2022 as an ideal follow-up to her previous work, Jezebel. It is a contemporary dance performance that blends hip-hop, science fiction, Afrofuturism, horror, and the visual arts to interrogate how Black bodies are represented and perceived in contemporary culture.

The scene opens with two enigmatic figures, the faces hidden by reflective masks. One sprinkles the other with a black liquid, in an atmosphere reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic ritual or tale. Over the course of the performative action the bodies seem to transform continuously: they become alien creatures, monsters, ghosts, images that escape any immediate identification.

One of the most interesting aspects is the way Menzo translates the musical technique of "chopped and screwed" into movement, developed in the Houston hip hop scene around DJ Screw. In this technique, music is slowed down and fragmented with cuts and scratches; similarly, in Darkmatter, gestures, tempos, and identities are slowed down, broken, and deformed. The result is a feeling of suspension, as if time itself worked differently, as the performers' bodies emerge from a dense, layered soundscape creating an eerie, hypnotic atmosphere.

In occasione della 61^ Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte – La Biennale di Venezia, l’Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia presenta DOKU The Illusion, mostra personale dell’artista cinese Lu Yang, a cura di Claire Staebler, visitabile dal 7 maggio al 4 ottobre 2026. L’esposizione si inserisce nel doppio anniversario degli Espaces Louis Vuitton e del programma Hors-les-murs della Fondation Louis Vuitton, confermando il loro impegno nella promozione internazionale dell’arte contemporanea.

Il lavoro di Lu Yang si sviluppa attraverso un linguaggio visivo che attinge a manga, anime e videogiochi, utilizzati come grammatica formale per generare entità ibride che superano i confini dell’identità e della corporeità. Al centro del progetto espositivo si trova DOKU The Illusion, quarto capitolo della serie avviata nel 2019, che segue le peregrinazioni di DOKU, avatar digitale costruito a partire dal volto dell’artista.

L’installazione trasforma lo spazio in un ambiente immersivo, sospeso tra santuario e rifugio futuristico. Un grande schermo LED, disposto come un altare, accoglie il film, mentre sculture e superfici specchianti coinvolgono lo spettatore in una dimensione contemplativa. Tra paesaggi giapponesi e immagini generate dall’intelligenza artificiale, l’opera esplora i temi della reincarnazione digitale, della libertà e della natura illusoria dell’esistenza, intrecciando suggestioni buddhiste e riflessioni sulla realtà contemporanea.

"DOKU The Illusion" by Lu Yang

On occasion of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia presents DOKU The Illusion, a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Lu Yang, curated by Claire Staebler, open from May 7 to October 4, 2026. The exhibition coincides with the double anniversary of the Espaces Louis Vuitton and the Fondation Louis Vuitton's Outside the Walls program, confirming their commitment to the international promotion of contemporary art.

Lu Yang's work develops through a visual language that draws on manga, anime, and video games, which he uses as a formal grammar to generate hybrid entities that transcend the boundaries of identity and corporeality. At the heart of the exhibition project is DOKU The Illusion, the fourth installment in a series launched in 2019, which follows the wanderings of DOKU, a digital avatar constructed from the artist's face.

The installation transforms the space into an immersive environment, suspended between a sanctuary and a futuristic refuge. A large LED screen, arranged like an altar, hosts the film, while sculptures and mirrored surfaces immerse the viewer in a contemplative dimension. Between Japanese landscapes and AI-generated images, the work explores the themes of digital reincarnation, freedom, and the illusory nature of existence, intertwining Buddhist influences with reflections on contemporary reality.
