Article 27 of the Testo Unico on Immigration regulates the entry of foreign athletes into the national territory and every year a Decree of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers based on a proposal from CONI establishes the maximum limit. The visa for sporting reasons is issued to foreign athletes and together with their coaches, technical directors, athletic trainers, and companions, to allow entry and participation in both amateur and professional competitions.
