The University of Salamanca has awarded a posthumous Doctorate honoris causa to fr. Francisco de Vitoria, OP, marking 500 years since his arrival at the Chair of Prima of Theology.

Receiving the distinction on behalf of the Order of Preachers, fr. Pablo Carlos Sicouly, OP, Vicar of the Master of the Order, called the recognition “singular, significant and timely.”

Francisco de Vitoria, founder of the School of Salamanca, helped shape the foundations of international law and defended the dignity and rights of all peoples, including the indigenous peoples of America.

For the Order of Preachers, this honor is more than an act of historical memory. It is a renewed invitation to seek truth, serve the common good, defend human dignity and work for peace.

As fr. Sicouly said, “Fr. Francisco de Vitoria has been and continues to be an authentic master,” who still inspires the work of teaching, research and service to the human community.
