Milwaukee's War Memorial and Art Museum, completed in 1957, was designed by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen. The building's right-angled forms were executed in muscular, exposed concrete, with the entire structure cantilevered out from support columns on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. Saarinen’s innovative design won praise for its dramatic use of space; Time magazine called it “one of the country’s finest examples of modern architecture put to work for civic purposes.” (Photo: Peter Alfred Hess / Wikimedia)
