Our course leader Jessica Wittingslow Mancini invited no-waste expert Lucia Cuffaro to lead a workshop with a twist: traditional preserving techniques, applied to skincare.

Here in Rome, as part of our 2026 Summer Food Study program, students discovered that preserving isn‘t just for vegetables. Using the same philosophy Italian grandmothers apply to food — nothing wasted, everything transformed — they made their own face cream from plant oils, floral water, and beeswax. They distilled lavender with a moka pot. They crafted deodorant from just three ingredients. All edible. All natural. All made by their own hands.

At TBI we help students learn how to navigate the city by accompanying them in a recon mission at the end of orientation. Today we were with our summer Illinois cohort on the bus, tram, metro snd train. .illinois
