In a beautiful personal memoir published in Pope Francis: in memoriam page, Fr. Jim Martin SJ shares the intimate side of a Pope who unexpectedly appointed him a Vatican consultor out of the blue, who regularly exchanged brief personal emails, and who anchored his entire papacy in the Ignatian margins—focusing on climate change as a spiritual crisis, and centering the poor in every homily.

Most powerfully, Fr. Martin recounts confronting the Pontiff regarding an offensive linguistic slip reported in the media near the end of his life. Where most global leaders would lean on PR defenses or bureaucratic silence, Francis listened intently through a translator, admitted his mistake with absolute ease, and apologized. He was a man completely unafraid of being challenged, because his identity wasn't wrapped up in power—it was wrapped up in Christ.

Francis taught the Church that to follow Jesus is to walk with the excluded and to speak with absolute freedom. He leaves behind a legacy that reshaped the modern papacy into a bridge of radical accompaniment.

What is your most enduring memory of Pope Francis's papacy? Let us share our gratitude and prayers in the comments below.
