🌍 13 March 2026 - 𝐏𝐢𝐠𝐬: 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭

China is strengthening its self-sufficiency in the pig sector, while at the same time reducing its dependence on imports. The 𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅-𝐒𝐔𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐘 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄 rose from 97.9% in 2024 to 98% in 2025, with prospects for a further increase in 2026.

According to USDA data, the increase is supported by the growth of 𝐃𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐂 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: in 2025, 703 million pigs were slaughtered, compared to 702.56 million in 2024, resulting in an increase in pork production from 57.06 to 57.15 million tonnes. At the same time, pork imports decreased by 6% compared to the previous year, confirming the strengthening of the domestic supply chain.

Despite these results, the domestic market shows signs of imbalance. According to recent news, the Chinese government has invited farmers to 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 to counter excess supply and weak demand. During a meeting with the main operators in the sector, the Ministry of Agriculture urged them to respect the production limits set in 2025 and to introduce a registration system to improve the monitoring of the sector.

Prices also reflect this pressure: in December 𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐊 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐒 continued to decline, extending the streak of decreases, most likely due to weak demand, economic stagnation, but also changes in consumer tastes. In January 2026 there was a timid reversal of trend, with a first increase in quotations, a sign of a possible rebalancing of the market after the phase of strong pressure caused by excess supply.
