Apokalokero: il momento sospeso tra estate e autunno / the moment suspended between summer and autumn🍂☀️
C’è proprio una parola greca per descrivere questa transizione che tutti viviamo adesso: apokalokero. Non è solo la fine dell’estate o l’inizio dell’autunno, ma un soave intermezzo, un momento sospeso tra il caldo estivo che si allontana e le prime fresche brezze autunnali.

Apokalokero porta con sé una sensazione unica, fatta di nostalgia per i giorni lunghi e assolati e di speranza per ciò che l’autunno ha in serbo per noi. È quel periodo in cui ci aggrappiamo agli ultimi weekend al mare, e allo stesso tempo iniziamo a sognare coperte calde e giornate più lente.

Segnala che è arrivato il momento di prendersi una pausa, riflettere, e magari pianificare quel viaggio che non siamo riusciti a fare o che desideriamo ancora.

There’s actually a Greek word that describes this transition we’re all experiencing now: apokalokero. It’s not just the end of summer or the start of autumn, but a gentle interlude, a moment suspended between the retreating summer warmth and the first cool autumn breezes.

Apokalokero carries a unique feeling, one of nostalgia for long, sunny days and hope for what autumn has in store for us. It’s that time when we cling to the last weekends by the sea, while simultaneously dreaming of warm blankets and slower days.

It reminds us that the time has come to take a break, reflect, and perhaps plan that trip we didn’t manage to take or still long for.

Salonicco, ti abbaglia di giorno e ti strega di notte / Dazzles by day, enchants by night

Mai sentito parlare di Salonicco?
È la metropoli del nord della Grecia, con oltre un milione di abitanti, la seconda città più grande del paese.

Il simbolo della città è la Torre Bianca (Lefkos Pyrgos), che domina la passeggiata lungomare. Eh sì, Salonicco sta proprio sul mare. La Torre, in origine conosciuta come "Kanli Kastelli," la "Torre del Sangue," fu utilizzata dagli Ottomani come luogo di esecuzioni.

La cosa che contraddistingue Salonicco, oltre alla sua eccellente gastronomia, è la vivace vita notturna.

Per me, rimane sempre una città magica. E' bellissima, sempre in movimento e nelle sue trame fa accadere delle cose straordinarie.

Have you heard of Thessaloniki?
It's the northern Greek metropolis with over a million inhabitants, ranking as the Greece's second-largest city.

The city's symbol is the White Tower (Lefkos Pyrgos), overlooking the waterfront. Yes, you guessed it, Thessaloniki is right on the sea. The Tower, originally known as "Kanli Kastelli," the "Tower of Blood," was used by the Ottomans as a place of executions.

Thessaloniki stands out, in addition to its excellent cuisine, for is its vibrant nightlife.

For me, it's the city of magic. It's gorgeous, constantly in motion, and within its fabric, extraordinary things happen.

Conosci solo l'ouzo?

Beh, esiste anche lo tsìpuro, che personalmente preferisco di gran lunga.

In Grecia, tipicamente, beviamo lo tsìpuro, prima (!) dei pasti come aperitivo con vari mezèdes; piccoli spuntini o antipasti di varia natura. Spesso continuiamo a berlo anche pasteggiando con le portate principali.

Viene servito in piccoli bicchieri, a volte stretti e lunghi, a temperatura ambiente. Si usa mettere più cubetti di ghiaccio oppure l'acqua ghiacciata per diluire la gradazione alcolica, visto il consumo prolungato durante il pasto. ;)

Principalmente è prodotto da vinacce d'uva, che sono gli scarti rimasti dalla produzione del vino, come la grappa italiana. Esiste anche la versione di tsìpuro con aggiunta di anice che assomiglia più al famoso ouzo.

Lo tsìpuro è spesso associato a momenti di convivialità tra amici e familiari. È comune offrire uno tsìpuro agli ospiti come segno di benvenuto. Visitando piccoli paesini delle montagne come benvenuto mi è stato offerto più volte lo tsìpuro da perfetti sconociuti anche alle 10 del mattino.

Do you only know ouzo?

Well, there's also tsipuro, which I personally prefer by far.

In Greece, typically, we drink tsipuro, before (!) meals as an aperitif with various mezedes; small appetizers of various kinds. Often, we continue to drink it while having the main courses.

It is served in small glasses, sometimes narrow and tall, at room temperature. It is common to add several ice cubes or iced water to dilute the alcohol content, given the extended consumption during the meal. ;)

It is primarily made from grape pomace, which is the leftover grape skins and seeds from winemaking, similar to Italian grappa. There is also a version of tsipuro with the addition of anise that is more similar to the famous ouzo.

Tsipuro is often associated with moments of camaraderie among friends and family. It is common to offer a glass of tsipuro to guests as a sign of welcome. When visiting small mountain villages, I've been offered tsipuro by perfect strangers as a welcome gesture, even at 10 in the morning.
