Gauteng Launches Groundbreaking Twice-Yearly HIV Prevention Injection Across 133 Facilities

JOHANNESBURG — The Gauteng Department of Health has officially commenced its phased rollout of Lenacapavir, a revolutionary long-acting HIV prevention injection, at 133 public health facilities across the province. The provincial launch marks a major milestone in South Africa’s public healthcare strategy. It follows the nationwide initiative officially introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 5 June 2026. This coordinated effort aims to drastically lower new transmission rates and accelerate the country's progress toward ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

A Game-Changer for HIV Prevention
Lenacapavir represents a massive shift in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Unlike traditional prevention methods that require individuals to take a pill every single day, Lenacapavir is administered as a subcutaneous injection just twice a year, or once every six months.Clinical trials have shown the drug to be highly effective. Health experts note that the six-month dosing schedule will drastically improve adherence, eliminate pill fatigue, and offer users a discreet prevention option.

High-Burden Areas Prioritised
Gauteng, as South Africa’s economic hub and most populous province, carries a significant portion of the country's HIV burden. Because of this, provincial health authorities have moved quickly to integrate the injection into local clinics. The 133 selected facilities across Gauteng are part of a broader network of 360 government clinics chosen across six high-burden provinces. The initial phase of this nationwide rollout is funded through a multi-million rand grant from the Global Fund, which secured the branded medication from pharmaceutical developer Gilead Sciences.

Moving Toward the 2030 Goal
South African health officials view the introduction of long-acting antiretrovirals as a crucial turning point.By making the twice-yearly injection accessible through public health clinics, the government intends to reach vulnerable demographics who struggle with daily oral medication regimes. This strategic expansion of preventative care options keeps South Africa firmly on track to meet its international commitment to eliminate HIV transmission within the decade.

UAT Urges Youth Registration Ahead of November Local Elections

MAFIKENG - 07 JUNE 2026 | The United Africans Transformation (UAT) and its youth wing, Tomorrow’s Future (TF), have launched a new branch in Modimola, Mafikeng, following outcry over a severe lack of service delivery and soaring youth unemployment in the area. The initiative forms part of a broader campaign to encourage residents to register for the upcoming Local Government Elections scheduled for 4 November 2026.

Neglect Sparks Political Mobilisation
The push to establish the branch intensified after a visit by Dr Tshego Matlhare, the UAT North West Provincial Convenor. During his visit to Modimola, Dr Matlhare observed widespread youth joblessness and a complete absence of local healthcare facilities, leaving residents to travel long distances for basic medical assistance. In response, Dr Matlhare challenged TF Provincial Chairperson and Modimola native, Jerry Motlhabane, to organise the community against these conditions. Within days, the community formed a new UAT branch, rapidly recruiting over 100 new members, locally referred to as "Doers."

A Promise of Immediate Action
At the official branch launch held at the Modimola sports ground on 31 May 2026, UAT North West Provincial Secretary Dunga Maake described the party as an organisation committed to service delivery even before securing governance. Maake condemned the current state of infrastructure in Modimola and pledged that under Dr Matlhare's provincial leadership, the party would work to fulfil basic democratic promises. Jerry Motlhabane echoed these sentiments, noting that his return to his birthplace was driven by a desire to change the unliveable conditions. He urged local youth to pursue education and join the political movement to reclaim their future.

Local Youth Demand an End to Favouritism
The launch resonated strongly with local residents who expressed deep frustration with traditional political parties. Newly recruited member Ausienyana Motlhabane praised UAT for its energetic, capable leadership.
"What interests me about UAT is that it is led by people who are still fit to do the work, not old people from other organisations who made empty promises," she said. She further alleged that municipal job opportunities are marred by favouritism, completely excluding the youth of Modimola.

Another young resident and newly active TF member, Boitumelo Marumola, dismissed previous political campaigns as self-enrichment schemes."We see this as an opportunity to govern ourselves and make sure the voices of young people in Modimola are heard in the higher offices of Mafikeng," Marumola stated, calling on youth across the municipality to join the party.
