Me and my partner at studio erum are delighted to share our proposal for the Dewan Award for Architecture 2022 | Rehabilitation Center for Terrorism Victims in Iraq, organized by Tamayouz Award & Dewan Architects + Engineers.

S E R E N I T Y

Abridged stories, unheard voices, and unfortunately, forgotten people; that’s the doomed faith of the victims of terrorism. Taking us on a journey through the untold stories lived by the witnesses, this project will tell the story of these victims in Iraq.

Terrorism's impact is not only restricted to humans; it goes deeper than that, affecting almost everything. The aim of the project is "holistic" rehabilitation. Focusing mainly on environmental, economical, and societal rehabilitation with a simple, open, yet private, accessible, and easily understood layout.

The journey begins with clinical rehabilitation. Victims will receive comprehensive and intensive care provided by professionals. Once they proceed in the recovery to a state that allows them social interaction, the spaces will open up to integrate them gradually into society. Our main goal is to break the barrier and integrate society into the victims’ healing process by increasing awareness. As a result, victims are helped in their healing journey and regain their confidence. Victims will participate in economic growth through the well-designed shops that were created for them to work in and to implement what they’ve been taught at the center.

It represents a strong message, as the materials used in the constitution are recycled war rubble. The palm tree placed within the minaret symbolizes the natural loss in Iraq. Because in the end, we will conserve what we loved, we will love what we understood, and we will understand only what we were taught, a proposal to implement hope for a better future.
