New algorithm reveals when you can get maximum retweets

Researchers at the University of Maryland have demonstrated that an algorithm that takes into account the past activity of each of your followers and makes predictions about future tweeting can lead to more retweets than other commonly used methods, such as posting at peak traffic times.
The internet is full of advice about when to tweet to gain maximum exposure, but the new study subjects marketing folk wisdom to scientific scrutiny.
Researcher William Rand, along with co-authors, examined the retweeting patterns of 15,000 Twitter followers during two separate five-week intervals in 2011 and 2012, from 6 am to 10 pm.
Retweets are especially valuable to marketers because they help to spread a brand's message beyond core followers. Most marketers are well aware there's a pattern to Twitter traffic. In the early morning, nothing much happens. Then people get into work and retweet intensely, as they do their morning surfing. The number of retweets drops as the day progresses, with a slight uptick at 5 pm.
Then it picks up again later "when people get back to their computers after dinner, or are out at a bar or restaurant using their phones," as Rand puts it. Monday through Friday follow roughly that pattern, but Saturday and Sunday show markedly different behaviour, with much smaller morning spikes and fewer declines during the day.
A "seasonal" model of posting -- the folk-wisdom model -- would suggest posting whenever there are peaks in that recurring weekly pattern.
The algorithm that the authors wrote, which took each individual's behaviour into account, was the most successful at generating retweets. The paper serves as a demonstration that applying analytic methods to Twitter data can improve a brand's ability to spread its message.
The study appears in Proceedings of Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining.

Smartphone App to Help Detect Eye Diseases

A new software that can detect eye diseases by making use of the smartphone camera has been developed.
The system is aimed at general physicians who could detect conditions such as diabetic macular edema and refer the patient to a specialist, researchers said.

Macular edema occurs when fluid and protein deposits collect on or under the macula of the eye (a yellow central area of the retina) and causes it to thicken and swell. The swelling may distort a person's central vision.

The software was developed by Medical and Surgical Centre for Retina in collaboration with biomedical engineers from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in Mexico and uses the camera of the phone to detect any abnormality in the thickness of the retina.

"The idea is to detect and prevent diseases in general practice. We are not replacing the specialist, we want to know which patients have a disease and make an early detection," said Dr. Juan Carlos Altamirano Vallejo, medical director of the Medical and Surgical Centre for Retina in Mexico.

He said that the technology is designed for general physicians, "who support the health system in Mexico and, even without in-depth knowledge of ophthalmology, can, with this tool, detect certain abnormalities and send the patient to the specialist."

With just having the app on the cellphone and focusing the camera on the eye, immediate results will be obtained, researchers said.

"We start off the fact that it is much cheaper to prevent than to cure blindness," said Vallejo.

The app also has utility in rural communities, where expertise areas such as ophthalmology have not arrived yet because equipment to detect these diseases are expensive and so far only the visiting specialists can do this kind of diagnosis, researchers said.

"It will help those that when they go to the eye doctor are already blind, we needed to go a step back, to know who is at risk and needs to go to a specialist. Not wait for a doctor," said Vallejo.

Software development has been satisfactory and is expected to soon be marketed and incorporated in the basic health system in Mexico, researchers said.

WhatsApp Desktop: An unofficial WhatsApp client for PC

A Roman developer, by the name of Alexandru Roșianu, has developed a third-party client for using WhatsApp on your desktop. The software is available for free to download and use. The software is nothing but a simple built-in browser, based on Chrome, and runs independently for WhatsApp Web only. The WhatsApp Desktop software is an unofficial client and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux desktops. It is easy to use, simple to install and a great alternative for easy WhatsApp use.

You may ask why should I install another software when I can do the same with my (already installed) browser. Well, the question seems justified, but it can benefit those who don’t want to open another tab just for WhatsApp. Additionally, the unofficial WhatsApp Desktop software also features an icon in the task bar which pops up notifications when a message arrives. You can minimize the software and tug it away for use when needed, so that it does not cause inconvenience when using a regular browser for other work.

Note: WhatsApp Desktop is an unofficial desktop client for PC and laptops. This is NOT an official product. It is just a wrapper for WhatsApp Web. No affiliation with WhatsApp.
