Brihadeeswarar, also known as Periya Kovil (Big Temple) is over 1000 years old and one of the most famous and splendid temples in India. It is completely made of granite and notable for the incredible intricate carvings. This temple can certainly be considered the best of Chola Dynasty architecture.

A very unique design feature with this temple is that the cap is so massive that Gopuram shadow will never show on the ground, it will only fall on the temple base.

The beauty of Thanjavur City is that Brihadeeswara Temple was built first and then the city was built up around it. In ancient Indian culture, the temple would be at the heart of every city as people built their lives around it.

Brihadeeswarar has also been associated with Karurar, one of the siddhas in yogic lore, whose samadhi is situated within the temple compound.
