On May 1st, 1960, Gujarat and Maharashtra were both formed as separate states in India after the reorganization of the Bombay State.

Before 1960, the Bombay State was a bilingual state, with both Marathi-speaking and Gujarati-speaking regions. However, there were demands for separate states based on linguistic and cultural differences. The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was a prominent organization that campaigned for a separate Marathi-speaking state, while the Mahagujarat Movement was a movement that demanded a separate state for Gujarati-speaking people.

After much debate and protests, the Bombay Reorganization Act was passed in April 1960, which split the Bombay State into two separate states - Gujarat and Maharashtra. The newly-formed state of Gujarat comprised the Gujarati-speaking areas of the former Bombay State, while Maharashtra comprised the Marathi-speaking areas.

The state of Bombay was officially dissolved on May 1st, 1960, and the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were established as separate entities.
