Strengthening Child Protection through Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being

The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Srinagar, appreciates the successful completion of the One-Week Capacity Building Programme on Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being of Children, organised by the Child Guidance and Well-being Centre (CGWC), IMHANS, Government Medical College Srinagar, in collaboration with Mission Vatsalya and with the support of UNICEF, from 6th–11th July 2026.

The programme provided a valuable platform to strengthen the capacities of child protection officials by deepening their understanding of child mental health, psychosocial support, trauma-informed care, communication skills, counselling approaches, child rights, and referral mechanisms. The well-designed sessions, interactive discussions, case studies, role plays, documentaries, and experience-sharing exercises made the training practical, enriching, and impactful.

Dr. Khair ul Nisa, Chairperson, CWC Srinagar, also served as a Resource Person and delivered a session on “Evolving Role of Child Care Institutions (CCIs)”, highlighting the need for child-centric, rehabilitative, and rights-based approaches in institutional care.

The programme was further enriched by the contributions of accomplished Resource Persons who shared their expertise and practical experience, making the learning experience meaningful for all participants.

The valedictory ceremony was attended by Mr Mohammad Yusuf (JKAS) District Child Protection Officer, Srinagar; Dr. Khair ul Nisa, Chairperson, Srinagar; Mr. Muzamil Ahmad, UNICEF Representative; and Dr. Deeba Nazir, Consultant Psychiatrist & Mentoring Institute – Tele MANAS, IMHANS-K. They emphasised the importance of integrating mental health perspectives into child protection practices.

Special appreciation goes to Ms Tawseef, Training Coordinator, whose meticulous planning, coordination, and dedication ensured the smooth conduct of this well-structured and impactful capacity-building programme.

Together, we continue to strengthen child protection systems and work towards creating safer, healthier and more nurturing environments for every child.
