RIVERS OF THE STATE OF MADHYA PRADESH
THE NARMADA:
• The Narmada also called the Rewa, is a river in central India and the fifth longest river in the Indian subcontinent. It is the third longest river that flows entirely within India, after the Godavari and the Krishna.
• The Narmada flows in Rift valley. It is the fifth largest river of India, also known as Life Line of MP.
• The British Raj called it the Nerbudda or Narbada. Narmada is a Sanskrit word meaning "the Giver of Pleasure". She is also known as the Ganga of MP on account of piousness.
• Famous Scholar Ptolemy called her Namodas. Other names are Maikal Suta, Soma Devi, Rewa etc.
• It originates in the hill of Amarkantak of Maikal Ranges, Amarkantak, Anuppur District and falls in the Gulf of Khabat, Arabian Sea.
• The length of Narmada is 1312 km of which 1077 flows in MP.
• The other rivers which flows through rift valley include Damodar River in Chota Nagpur Plateau & Tapti. The Tapti River and Mahi River also flow through rift valleys, but between different ranges.
• There are 41 big and small tributaries of Narmada of which major are – Hiran, Sher, Shakkar, Dudhi, Banjar, Hatni, Kundi, Goi, Mann, Oori, Tava, Chhoti Tava, Kollar, Barna, Tindoni, Ganjal, Orsang etc..
• The Narmada flows through 15 districts of MP: Anoopur, Dindori, Mandala, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Harda, Hoshangabad, Dewas, Raisen, Sehore, Khandwa, Khargone, Dhar, Badwani and Alirajpur.
• The Narmada basin area is 93,180 sq.km with 89.9% in MP, 6.5% in Gujarat and 2.7% in Maharashtra.
• Waterfalls on the Narmada:
1. Kapil Dhara (Anoopur – 8 met.)
2. Dugdh Dhara (Anoopur – 100 met.)
3. Dunwadhaar (Bheda Ghat Jabalpur – 15 met.)
4. Mandhar (Badwah)
5. Dardi (Badwah)
6. Sahastra Dhara (Maheshwar – 8 met.)
• The major cities situated on the bank of the Narmada River are: Amarkantak, Hoshangabad, Nemawar, Punasa, Maheshwar, Dhar, Jabalpur, Handiya, Narsinghpur, Badwani, Omkareshwar, Badwah, Mandleshwar, and Jhabua.
• The Narmada makes estuaries when she merges into the Arabian Sea.
THE CHAMBAL:
• The Second largest river of MP, the Chambal originates from the Janapav hills (616 feet) of Vindhyachal range Mhow, Indore.
• Its ancient name was Charmawati. Its length is 965 km.
• It flows in Indore, Dhar, Ujjain, Ratlam, Neemuch, Mandsaur and then via Rajasthan (Boondi, Kota, Dholpur) she is merged in the Yamuna river near Etawa (UP).
• The tributaries of the Chambal include Shipra, Choti Kalisindh, Sivanna, Retam, Ansar, Kalisindh, Banas, Parbati, Seep, Kuwari, Kuno, Alnia, Mej, Chakan, Parwati, Chamla, Gambhir, Lakhunder, Khan, Bangeri, Kedel and Teelar.
• She forms a waterfall Chulia 18 meter high in Bhainsrorgarh Rajasthan.
• The Chambal flows in the northern MP where she makes wilds through Gully Errosion mainly in Murena and Bhind district of MP.

THE TAPTI:
• The third largest river of MP the Tapti River originates from Multai (Betul) of the Satpura range and terminates into the bay of Khambhat in the Arabian Sea. Its length is 725 km.
• It also flows from the east to the west direction like the Narmada River.
• Its tributary is the Purna River.
• The major cities situated on the bank of the Tapti River are: Burhanpur and Surat.
• She makes wilds on the Bhensdehi plateau.
THE SON:
• The Son or Swarna River also originates in the hill of Amarkantak of Maikal Ranges, Amarkantak, Anuppur District and merges into the Ganga near Danapur of Bihar.
• Its length is 780 km and flows through Anoopur, Shahdol, Umariya, Rewa Sidhi and Sonbhadra (UP) districts.
• Its basin area is 17,900 sq.km. Its tributary is the Johila River.
• The flood of Son is very destructive.
THE BETWA:
• The Betwa River originates from the Kumra village of Raisen in the hills of Vindhyachal range and merges into the Yamuna River near Hameerpur. Its length is 380 km.
• The main tributaries of this river are the Bina and the Dhasaan from the right side and the Sindhu from the left side.
• The Bina River forms a waterfall named Bhalkund Pratap (38 met.) near Rahatgarh (Sagar).
• The Betwa also known as the Ganga of MP on account of the pollution.
• The major cities situated on the bank of this river are Orchha, Sanchi, Guna and Vidisha.
THE KSHIPRA:
• The Kshipra River originates from the hills of Kakra Bardi in Indore district and merges into the Chambal River.
• Its length is 195 km and flows through Indore, Dewas and Ujjain districts.
• The major city situated on this river is Ujjain. It is also called the Ganga of Malwa.
THE TAWA:
• The Tawa River originates from the hills of Mahadev in Panchmadi and merges into the Narmada River in Handiya (Hoshangabad) where she makes Mandhar waterfall.
• Its length is 172 km. The largest road bridge of MP is also on the Tawa River (1350.22 met.)
THE KAALI SINDH:
• The Kaali Sindh River originates from Bagli of Dewas in the hills of Vindhyachal range and terminates into the Chambal River in Rajasthan via Shajapur and Dewas districts.
• Its length is 150 km. The major cities situated on the bank of this river are Dewas and Sonkachh.
THE KEN:
• The Ken River are also known as Shaktimukti & Dirnawati originates from the Kemur range in Katni and terminates in the Yamuna via Panna and Banda districts.
THE SINDH:
• The Sindh originates from the Sironj tehsil of Guna and terminates into the Yamuna in UP.
• It flows in Guna, Shivpuri, Datiya and Bhind districts.
• It divides the district of Guna.
THE BENGANGA:
• The Benganga originates from the Paraswada plateau of Seoni and terminates in the Vardha River in Maharashtra. It is the only river of MP which flows towards south.
• The congregation of the Vardha and the Benganga river is called Prahita.
THE KUNWARI:
• It originates from the plateau of Shivpuri and terminates in the Sindh River near Lahar tehsil of Bhind.
THE PARVATI:
• It originates from Shajapur and terminates Chanchoda tehsil of Guna. The major cities situated on the bank of this river are Aasta, Rajgarh, Pachore, Shajapur.
THE KUNA:
• The Kuno River originates from the plateau of Shivpuri and terminates into the Chambal.
THE TOANS:
• It originates in the hills of Kemur ranges of Satna district and terminates into the Ganga near Sirsa UP.
• Its ancient name was Tamsa.
• Its tributaries are Beehad and Vellen
