Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayak Chaturthi, commemorates the rebirth of Lord Ganesha the remower of obstacles, marking new beginnings.
The festival is celebrated by bringing idols (statues) of Lord Ganesha into homes or installing them on public stages. These idols are worshipped daily for 10 days by chanting prayers and hymns and fasting(vrata).
The festival ends on the 10th day where these idols are carried in public processions with music where people will chant and dance to celebrate. The idols are then immersed in a nearby river or sea called Ganpati Visarjan. Here the idols are said to dissolve marking Lord Ganeshas return to his celestial abode.
