We have started this Session first Handicrafts Fair in Kolkata.

With the help of "Care. of .Kolkata" we were able to participate in their program. Many thanks to all their members.

Almost half of our annual income comes from handicrafts. Around 6 months of the year we get the fair with the help of the government and various organizations. The fairs mainly run from September to February. Rest of the time we have to look at the work of labour to earn money.

Our handicrafts are made of kashi grass/sabai grass and palm leaves. A lot of work is required to make these handicrafts.

First of all, grass and palm leaves have to be cut and brought from far away when it is sunny. Then the grass and palm leaves are allowed to dry in the sun for 3-4 days. If the sun does not get properly, the grass and palm leaves turn black which is not usable. So all work has to be done while there is sunshine. After 3 - 4 days of proper drying we start working with that grass. It takes all day to make one thing. 2 -3 days for big items.
