You Don't Have to Play to Win: The Power of Helping Others Succeed
"The purpose of life is not to win. The purpose of life is to grow and share. When you come to look back on all that you have done in life, you will get more satisfaction from the pleasure you have brought into other people's lives than you will from the times that you outdid and defeated them." - Harold Kushner
In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Jesse Owens amazed the world by winning 4 gold medals in track and field events.
However, his path to victory was paved by the selfless efforts of his coach, Larry Snyder.
Despite rampant racism, Snyder trained Owens and believed in his potential when no one else would. He focused on setting Owens up for success rather than hogging the spotlight himself.
Snyder exemplifies that you don't have to personally win glory to feel fulfilled. There can be great joy and purpose in playing a supporting role to uplift others.
Why Help others?
1) Creates a lasting positive impact beyond oneself
2) Builds bonds of trust, teamwork and community
3) Provides perspective - your problems seem smaller when you focus on helping others
4) Enables you to learn through teaching and mentoring
5) Gives a sense of meaning in making a difference in the world
What needs to be done?
1) Identify opportunities: This can include volunteering, mentoring, or simply offering a helping hand.
2) Be empathetic: Put yourself in the other person's shoes and try to understand their perspective.
3) Take action: Don't just talk about helping others, take action. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's life.
How you can help others achieve their potential:
1) Leverage your knowledge and expertise to train them on developing skills
2) Share your network. Connect them to opportunities and people who can aid their goals
3) Offer guidance to help them avoid mistakes you made on your journey
4) Be a listening ear when they feel discouraged. Motivate them.
5) Advocate for them and promote their talents where you have influence
6) Allow them to take the lead and shine while you play a supporting role
7) Facilitate friendships and peer support to build a team culture
When to help?
1) If a team member is struggling, offer your help and support.
2) If a team member is learning a new skill, offer your guidance and support.
3) If a team member is working on a challenging project, offer your help and support. Be a sounding board and offer feedback
In a world driven by personal ambitions and individual victories, remember that you don't have to play the game to win.
Your legacy can be defined by the number of lives you've touched and the success you've inspired in others.
The greatest victory lies in helping others reach their full potential.
“A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.”–James Keller
