This monochrome view is the last image taken by the imaging cameras on NASA's Cassini spacecraft. It looks toward the planet's night side, lit by reflected light from the rings, and shows the location at which the spacecraft would enter the planet's atmosphere hours later.
Launched aboard a Titan IVB/Centaur on October 15, 1997, Cassini was active in space for more than 18 years, with 13 years spent orbiting Saturn, studying the planet and its system after entering orbit on July 1, 2004.
Cassini's end involved a series of close Saturn passes, approaching within the rings, then an entry into Saturn's atmosphere on September 15, 2017, to destroy the spacecraft.
