The Tesla Model 3 is finally out in the open almost two years after the name of Tesla’s compact executive car was first announced. The new Model 3 made its world debut in front of an invited crowd of Tesla owners, potential buyers and journalists at the the SpaceX headquarters in Los Angeles, California.
Tesla’s founder and CEO Elon Musk took the stage before introducing the crowd and the watching world to the new Tesla Model 3 - the low-priced, mass-market electric car that Tesla hopes will propel it into the big leagues of global automotive manufacturing.
The Model 3 will go head-to-head with the established big sellers in the compact executive car class after its UK release date, set for the end of 2017. It will have a starting price of $35,000 (£24,400) in the US but Elon Musk hinted that most models will be sold for closer to $42,000 (£29,400) once options are added. Shifting units is unlikely to be a problem in any case with Tesla reporting that 276,000 pre-orders had been taken for the Model 3 by the end of 2 April, just two days after the reveal.
"We're blown away by what Michael Bay has been able to do with our new digital 3D cameras. With Transformers: Age of Extinction, he takes IMAX® 3D to the next level - putting moviegoers smack in the middle of the action with the Autobots and Mark Wahlberg as audiences have never seen before."
