The distance of a full marathon is 26.2 miles, a standard established during the 1908 London Olympics. The origin of this distance is linked to the legend of Pheidippides, a messenger in ancient Greece who supposedly ran approximately 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of a Greek victory over the Persians. The additional 0.2 miles were added during the 1908 Olympics to ensure the race started at Windsor Castle and finished in front of the royal box at the Olympic Stadium.
