Ganjifa – the circular hand-painted playing cards – are more than just a game.

With roots in Persia, shaped by the Mughals, and embraced by India, these cards evolved into vibrant storytellers. Each hand-painted card narrates episodes from Indian mythology, brought alive with local colour, culture, and spirit.

In Maharashtra, the Sawantwadi royal family has preserved this intricate art form, ensuring the timeless heritage of Ganjifa continues to inspire generations.

Students of The Renaissance had the rare opportunity to learn this living tradition at its very origin.
