Shaji .N.M., fondly called as ‘Tuber Man’ of Kerala has been awarded the India Biodiversity Award 2021 in the individual category of ‘Conservation of domesticated species’.

Mr. Shaji, who conserves a wide array of around 200 tuber crops including greater yam, lesser yam, elephant foot yam, arrow root, colocasia, sweet potato, cassava and Chinese potato in his farm has received State awards seven times for his efforts. He has also received the Plant Genome Savior Reward 2015, instituted by PPV&FR Authority, New Delhi.

The award, carrying ₹2 lakh cash prize and citation, was declared on May 22, 2021 during the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2021.

On September 29, 1959, Arati Saha became the first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel.

• She was born in an Indian-Bengali household in Kolkata. She started learning swimming when she was just four years old.
• She was a long-distance swimmer who later became the first Indian sportswoman to be awarded the Padma Shri.
• In her early years, Saha won several state-level championships and used to take part in long-distance swimming competitions in the Ganges.
• Arati got the first inspiration to cross the English Channel from Brojen Das.
• At the 1958 Butlin International Cross Channel Swimming Race, Das became the first person from the Indian subcontinent to cross the English Channel.
• Greta Andersen, a Danish-born female swimmer from the United States clocked 11 hours and 1 minute and stood first among both men and women.
• Anderson's feat inspired female swimmers all over the world.
