Central Air

A split-system central air unit is located outside of the house and is attached to a series of duct work that runs throughout the house. The cooling unit is usually tapped into the same duct work that handles your heating unit. This type of system keeps the noise of the unit outside and the cool air inside.

Ductless

If your home does not have duct work but has an open floor plan, this would be a feasible option. A large window unit can be installed into an exterior wall. Framing the unit on the inside and outside will make it look like it is part of the building's structure and will not detract from the home's appearance. This alternative can also work with a central air unit. The duct from the unit will run directly into an exterior wall and will be covered with an air vent, allowing the cool air to enter the area.

Portable

A portable air unit is an economical option for a single room. This type of unit usually provides heat as well as cool air. This unit is just as noisy as a window unit. Most of these units have a vent hose similar to a dryer vent hose that will need to be vented out through a window or an exterior wall. The unit comes equipped with the parts needed for window venting. If you would like to vent it through the wall you will need to purchase a dryer venting wall plate and an outer flap-style vent cover.

Ev***rative Coolers

Ev***ration coolers are also known as swamp coolers. This type of cooling unit pulls air through damp filters, cooling the air before it enters the house. Swamp coolers can be installed on the roof or exterior wall. Roof-mounted swamp coolers are usually connected to duct work that runs through the attic, but they can also be ductless. Wall-mounted swamp coolers can also be connected to duct work that runs under the floor or can be ductless. This type of unit puts some moisture in the air and for this reason they are not widely used in humid regions. Ev***rative coolers use 60 to 80 percent less energy than window air conditioners.

Important Factors Should Consider Before Choosing the AC...

You may be in a hurry to buy a new AC for this hot summer, But before going to choose one randomly just know these factors which greatly affect your AC, power and economical aspects. The need for Cooling and power consumption will vary based on different things the most important thing is about the “ton”. Before purchase calculates how much ton AC you actually need, it preventing you from buying a costly and heavy ton AC which you actually don’t want.

◾You can simply use the formula to calculate the total ton of AC you required, you just need to measure your room in feet (Length x Width x Height) then compare the below given chart and find out how much ton AC you want.

◾Total tonnage of AC required = Length (feet) x Breadth (feet) x Height (feet) of room/floor

◾Note that never go to showroom and ask opinion about the salesman they will try for selling an AC with huge tons.

◾Number and doors in a room or floor is another important to know about the leakage of air

◾Products in your room or home like heat generating equipments

◾Amount of sunlight exposure to or over the particular area need to be cooled

TIPS to beat the HEAT!!!

Don't forget that the human race lived for many, many years without air conditioning. Within the limits of your particular health situation, your body can adapt to the summer increase in temperature. Just become accustomed to the fact that you may have to alter your activities and schedule to 'beat the heat'.

•Stock your freezer with flavored ice treats. Freeze a bag of chopped fruit such as watermelon or pineapple. Cooling down can be a tasty experience too!

•If all else fails, go to the mall, library, church, movie theater or some other air-conditioned public building.

•Females: Try a slightly wet tissue in the cleavage. It's great at preventing that annoying drip down the front of your clothing.

•Apply a thin layer of vanishing cream to your freshly washed, dried face. Whether or not you have acne, the vanishing cream helps to absorb facial perspiration and postpones the moment when your glasses slip down your nose!

•Fill your bathtub with cool water. Once you are used to the temperature let some water out and refill with cold water. Keep doing this until you are sufficiently cold. Your body will stay cool for a long time after you get out.

•Alcohol acts as a diuretic, which make you urinate more often than usual. This promotes further dehydration through water loss. Contrary to popular belief, caffeinated and sugary drinks can still promote good hydration, although not as effectively as pure water.

•If your garage is under living areas of your home, leave your hot car outside to cool off before putting it in the garage.

•Sweat includes both water and salt from your body. If you are sweating a lot, it is actually healthier to drink something with salt or other electrolytes in it to replenish the lost salt as well as the lost fluid. Gatorade or other sports drinks are good to use for this. Soda usually has high sodium content as well, but may contain the diuretic of caffeine, which won't hydrate you as well.

•Completely wet a synthetic or partially synthetic T-shirt in warm water and wear it (using warm water keeps the shirt from feeling shockingly cold when you first put it on). The synthetic will ensure no "wet T-shirt" look and the ev***ration will keep you wonderfully cool for a couple of hours or more. This works even in public, as the shirt doesn't look wet.

•If your home has a basement and central air system, have an HVAC professional add a cold air return in the basement to pull the naturally cool air that falls down and recycle it into the rest of your home by simply setting your furnace to "fan" mode.

•This low-fi air-conditioning technique actually works: 1) Place a medium-sized box-fan in a small window facing out. Seal up any remaining open areas in the window with cardboard. 2)Close every other window in your house except for one, left open just a crack... This will actually blow all of the stagnant hot air out of your house and significantly cool down the overall temperature.

Don't lower Air Conditioner temperature beyond 23 degree Celcius...

What Temperature Do You Set Your Air Conditioner To?

Recently I’ve been living next to someone who I’m convinced sets their air conditioner to about 20C (70F). I’ve heard it turn on when I have been very comfortable both inside and outside. At the same time I reckon that they probably have their heater set not much below that, so they always stay right at the same temperature year round.

The recommended temperature to set your air conditioner to is 23C. This is the best setting to balance the economy of running your air conditioner and setting it to a comfortable temperature.
Some people find 23C to be too warm to set the air conditioner to. If that’s the case for you then running a fan is an economical solution to help augment cooling provided by the air conditioner. My personal preference is to run the fans on high with the air conditioner set to 23C rather than setting the air conditioner any cooler than that.

I have a few friends who really crank down their air conditioner at night because the like to be cold when they sleep. To help us sleep at night in the summer we leave the air conditioner at 23C, set the fan to high, this helps us to sleep at a comfortable temperature, without increasing the costs to cool the house.

What temperature do you have your air conditioner set to and what do you do to make your air conditioner cool your house more effectively?
