For generations, institutions have been treated as the default response for persons with disabilities in India.

But across two days under Project Ability Empowerment, persons with disabilities, care leavers, disability rights groups, legal experts, researchers, and came together to ask a different question:
What does dignity, choice, and community living truly look like?

The conversations were rooted in lived experience, from care leavers speaking about life inside institutions to disability advocates pushing for autonomy, accessibility, accountability, and stronger community-based alternatives.

One message echoed throughout:
Institutions cannot remain the default response.

The future must centre community living, relationships, support systems, and the right of every person to make choices about their own life.
