This statement is actually a common misconception, but it's not true. Cold water typically freezes faster than hot water under normal conditions. This phenomenon is known as the Mpemba effect, named after Erasto Mpemba who observed it in the 1960s. Several factors can contribute to this effect, including faster evaporation of hot water, convection currents in the water, and differences in how dissolved gases behave. However, in controlled experiments and under most circumstances, cold water will freeze faster because it starts at a lower temperature and doesn't have to lose as much heat to reach the freezing point.
