Breaking-in Your Motorcycle the right way and why is it Important.

When your motorcycle is new the friction in the engine is higher since all the metal parts are new. So a disciplined riding is required till you bed-in. The initial 800-1200 kms determines how your engine’s future performance and efficiency will be. Here are few pointers to keep in mind while breaking-in your motorcycle.

1. It’s a rule of thumb, use only 3/4th of your throttle during the Breaking-in period
2. Avoid high engine speeds
3. During cold start, wait let the engine run till the RPM drops to normal and then ride off.
4. Avoid sudden acceleration and rapid starts
5. Don’t lug your motorcycle, shift down if you feel there is a load on the engine
6. Similarly shift up when the engine speeds are high
7. Contrary to general notion, you don’t have to break-in the bike on a long distance highway ride where you cruise on top gear. You have to prudently ride on all gears, so do a mix or city and highway riding during the breaking-in period
8. Read your manual and ensure you maintain RPMs which your need ride in during this period

Bikes which haven’t been properly broken-in will have sub optimum fuel efficiency and performance.
