Anger. Insecurity. Pride. Jealousy. Entitlement. Control. Shame. Resentment.
These are not unusual feelings. Most of us have felt them. The difference is what happens when nobody talks about them. When they are never questioned. When they are allowed to grow. That is when feelings become habits. Habits become patterns and patterns, over time, become harm.
This month, the Meer Foundation looked at the emotions that come before violence, not to excuse them, but to understand them. Because violence doesn't come out of nowhere. It builds. Slowly. Inside people who often look completely ordinary.
If we only ever talk about what happened, we miss the part where it could have been stopped. That is the conversation we need to be having.

Shame is not an emotion we associate with people who cause harm. But it is one of the most common things found underneath it. Shame about worth, about status, about being seen as weak, inadequate, less than. When shame transforms, it becomes rage that looks for somewhere to go and so the person closest is usually where it lands.

Entitlement rarely feels like entitlement to the person who has it. It feels like knowing what you deserve. It feels like having standards. It is built slowly, by culture, by conditioning, by a world that has consistently said yes. So when the answer is no, it doesn't land as a boundary. It lands as a threat. For some, the response to that threat is force, physical, emotional, financial. Whatever it takes to restore what they believe is rightfully theirs.
