The ICC’s climate solutions team visited Gumla (Jharkhand), one of the focal districts for a pathbreaking clean energy and livelihood initiative led on the ground by our NGO partner, Mlinda Charitable Trust (MCT).
Across 14 villages in Gumla and Lohardaga, MCT is enabling rural communities to tap into the power of solar mini-grids, turning clean energy into a catalyst for economic independence and climate resilience.
From mustard and groundnut processing units to sal leaf value chains, clean energy is fuelling 33 micro-enterprises, many of them led by women. These aren’t just businesses; they are vehicles for empowerment, income generation, and dignity.
Women make up 50% of participating entrepreneurs, and their leadership is visible across every layer of this project, from agriculture to enterprise development and local governance. They are cultivating more than crops: they are cultivating confidence, community, and climate action.
With climate-smart farming practices being adopted across 70% of targeted farms, the region is not just reducing its CO₂ emissions by 30%, but also strengthening its natural resource base for the generations to come.
With 4 collection centers set up through local FPOs, farmers and producers now have stronger access to markets — enabling better prices, reduced waste, and a more sustainable value chain.
MCT’s grassroots efforts are unlocking the full potential of clean energy by making it local, inclusive, and enterprise-driven.

In this short photo essay, captures the 300-acre dump yard occupying the last remaining marshland, Pallikaranai, in Chennai, over three years (2020-2022).
“Home to hundreds of flora and fauna species, this area was my daily commute route as a kid, and I enjoyed observing so many birds, including flamingos, during the migratory season. But as the years passed, I noticed the decrease in the number of birds and, out of curiosity, I wanted to check what was happening with my drone. I was baffled to see a garbage dump this big in the middle of the city.
With growing population and urban development, waste generation is increasing. Chennai alone generates close to 3500 tonnes of garbage daily, and all of this is being dumped in Pallikaranai. The wetland, which was supposed to act as a ‘carbon sink’, is now a source of pollution, emitting carbon dioxide and a whopping 8.4 gigatonnes of methane every year (Anna University, 2019).
The good and hopeful news is that on 27 July, 2022, the Pallikaranai marshland was officially included in the coveted Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. However, the dump yard has only been growing.”

‘Voices from India’s climate ecosystem’ is a series on incredible civil society organisations in India’s climate ecosystem. In this, we highlight impactful climate initiatives these organisations are working on, how they benefit communities they work with and the ecosystem, and one win and one challenge that they’d like funders to hear about.

To remind the world to hold on to hope, the UN has declared 2025 the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation. A striking symbol of global warming’s effects, this is an opportunity to highlight the irreplaceable role glaciers play in regulating the global climate, water systems, and providing freshwater essential for billions of people.
