“I started travelling when I was a child - my parents owned a travel agency, which might have been the catalyst that triggered my intense passion to visit every corner of the globe!
When I was 18, I had visited about 70 countries and decided to shatter the previous record by doing what I loved the most - travelling. By the time I turned 21, I also travelled to some of the world's most inaccessible places, such as North Korea.
And I became a Guinness World Record holder for being the youngest person ever to travel to every single country in the world.
With my family, I wandered from the floating villages of Cambodia to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, from Ushuaia at the tip of Argentina to the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
My parents would take me out of school and place me on independent study for weeks and months at a time every year. My parents placed a lot of importance on exposing me to every way of life around the world and that had a very profound impact on the person I am today.
A woman travelling solo is always seen as dramatic by patriarchal societies across the globe. I was determined to show the world that it isn't as frightening as the media portrays it to be, and that kindness can be found anywhere. Most of my projects were self-funded. I managed to stretch out my savings for a year and a half.

“Since my maternal grandparent’s house is in Nainital, most of our vacations were around Nainital and Jim Corbett. Even though the destination was the same, the experience was always surreal - the early morning drives, watching the sunrise with my dad’s old Hindi music playlist in the background. Suddenly realising that we’ve reached the hills, the AC would be turned off because the air was so chilly and all of us eagerly would eagerly wait to see the snow-clad Himalayas.
But there was this one time when something unexpected happened and that experience has stayed with me.
I have been visiting Nainital every year twice - but coincidentally, never in 20 years have I experienced snowfall. In January 2020, I went with my family and we decided to go for a hike, with of course zero expectations of snowfall because even the forecast wasn’t hinting towards it.
And even when we started moving further, we did not feel like it was going to snow at all because the conditions were nowhere close to even raining. But as soon as we reached the summit of China Peak, we realised that something had changed - the sky wasn’t clear and suddenly there were clouds everywhere.
We suddenly felt a chill in the air and before we knew my sister just shouted, ‘Snow! Snow!’. And that was the moment I experienced snowfall for the first time - a moment that I can never forget! It was a special moment for my dad too - he has been coming to Nainital for 40 years and it was his first as well.

“Along with working as an economist in Bengaluru, I’ve always felt a longing towards travelling and exploring the world. Through the last 25 years, I’ve travelled across 66 countries and 6 continents out of the seven.
I started travelling solo when I was in Sweden with my husband. He worked in the civil service, so his job took precedence over mine and I went wherever he went. With not much to do in a foreign country, I decided to go out and hit the road. I took the ship to Finland, and then the Flåm railway to Norway, and went on to Denmark and Berlin.
What’s my motivation at the age of 70, you may ask? Maybe it is just a romantic notion, but I think there are cultures out there that are very different from ours, and that excites me. There are so many exciting things to go out and discover in person. I just can’t settle for secondhand accounts of anything, you know?
Packaged tours are so predictable. They show you what they want to show, not what you want to see. Today, my list of adventures includes getting locked in a building in Iran, finding herself in Nairobi without proof of being vaccinated against yellow fever, and reaching Czech Republic without a valid visa.
At this point, I have done everything - from skydiving to camping, to setting out to far-off places all by myself. And I love every bit of it.”
