My last illustration for for their Illuminations exhibit in San Francisco looking at the theme of ‘Nature Knows Best’. This one illustrates changes from early human history, when we were inextricably part of nature. With expanded cities and industries, we’ve created barriers to separate the human world from the natural world.

Many of the narratives we spin around the separation of humans from nature are based more in our comfort than our facts. The result is a growing number of endangered species, changing climate, invasive species permanently altering ecosystems, habitat loss, and a general disconnect between humanity and the natural world. Thoughtfully reintegrating our practices, technologies, and designs with nature can help support all life on earth.

My 2nd illustration for for their Illuminations exhibit in San Francisco looking at the theme of ‘Nature Knows Best’. Swipe for details 👉🏼 This one looks studies how many societies mimic earth’s processes (geomimicry) without adjusting for finite resources. By more intentionally leveraging insights and resources from non-living systems, we can craft more sustainable living systems.
*
Since we first began to carve tools by mimicking the natural process of erosion through whittling, we’ve used geologically-inspired techniques to aid our production and manufacturing. But what works for non-living systems won’t always work for living systems, at least not without some careful planning. Geomimicry has largely shaped our industrial world, but when it depends on the forced extraction of natural resources, it can degrade the natural world.

The first of 4, this one looks as water as the connective tissue of nature. Through rivers, lakes, oceans, and the atmosphere, the whole world is entangled. That connectedness creates an integrated tapestry where life can thrive, but it's also marked by fragility: changes to one element can have ripple effects on the entire system.
*
For instance, as global temperatures rise, glaciers melt, which increases sea levels, which damages coastal regions. Rising CO2 in the atmosphere results in more uptake of CO2 by oceans, which lowers the pH, creating inhospitable waters. And mineral and micronutrient-dense dust from deserts around the world are carried by winds over the oceans to fertilize the Amazon rainforest. Everything effects everything.

Drew this piece titled Mumbai मसाला for - it’s an exploration of home: a hurricane of dabbas, chai, and mirchi… and the Mumbaikars who have somehow learned to live in its eye. By presenting elements of a familiar metropolis in an unexpected composition, viewers are transformed into flaneurs: wandering through an unknown yet comfortable urban landscape. The vibrant colour palette and interwoven forms are an expression of the calibrated chaos inherent in the city. Ultimately, the piece is a holistic representation of the people who live and love Mumbai.
