World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27, was first launched in 1980 by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) after the International Union of Official Travel Organisations adopted the UNWTO's statutes in a special assembly held in Mexico City in 1970.

The theme for World Tourism Day 2024 is "Tourism and Peace", focusing on how tourism can foster mutual understanding and harmony among cultures. Georgia will serve as the host country for this year’s celebration.
