River Ranching Programme
The College of Fisheries Science, DUVASU, Mathura successfully organized a river ranching programme in the Yamuna River as part of the celebration of the National Farmers’ Day. The initiative aimed at enhancing fish stock, conserving aquatic biodiversity, and promoting sustainable fisheries management in natural water bodies. This programme was funded by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) Hyderabad.
During the programme, approximately 15,000 fingerlings of Indian Major Carp species were released into the Yamuna River at Gokul Ghat. The ranching activity is expected to support the restoration of native fish populations, improve ecological balance, and strengthen livelihood opportunities for local fishing communities.
The programme was graced by Shri Shailjakant Mishra, Vice-Chairman, Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad, Mathura, as the Chief Guest, and Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Abhijit Mitra, DUVASU, Mathura, along with senior district officials including the District Forest Officer, Additional District Magistrate, and Assistant Director of Fisheries, Mathura. The Dean, College of Fisheries Science, Dr. Nityanand Pandey, along with Faculty, staff members, and students were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Shri Shailjakant Mishra appreciated the initiative of the University and highlighted the cultural and ecological significance of the Yamuna River. He emphasized that such river ranching programmes play a vital role in restoring aquatic biodiversity and strengthening the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Abhijit Mitra emphasized that river ranching is a scientifically proven approach for restoring declining fish populations and maintaining ecological balance in riverine systems. He highlighted the importance of integrating conservation efforts with livelihood enhancement of fishers and urged stakeholders to adopt sustainable and eco-friendly fisheries practices. He also stressed the need for continuous monitoring and scientific management of river ecosystems to ensure long-term sustainability.

World Zoonoses Day 2026 Celebrated at DUVASU, Mathura
Under the dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Abhijit Mitra, DUVASU, Mathura, observed World Zoonoses Day on 6 July 2026 with a series of impactful awareness and academic activities promoting the One Health approach.
The celebrations commenced with an awareness programme at the Primary School within the university campus, where students were educated about zoonotic diseases such as rabies, water- and food-borne illnesses, diseases associated with raw milk consumption, mosquito-borne infections, and the importance of proper hand hygiene. Preventive measures were explained through interactive sessions.
An Online National e-Quiz Competition held at noon witnessed the enthusiastic participation of around 150 students from medical and veterinary colleges across the country.
The academic session concluded with two insightful expert lectures at the Dhanvantari Hall of the university:
🔹 Dr. Biswabinod Sanfui, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, KD Medical College, delivered a lecture on "One Health and Zoonoses."
🔹 Dr. Vikas Pathak, Dean, Veterinary College, DUVASU, spoke on "From Farm to Fork: The Zoonotic Diseases Crisis Hidden in Our Food Supply."
Adding a creative dimension to the celebrations, the Department of Veterinary Public Health (VPH) organized a Poster Competition, highlighting the importance of public awareness in preventing zoonotic diseases.
The event was made successful through the active participation and dedicated efforts of the faculty, students, and staff of the Departments of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, reaffirming DUVASU's commitment to safeguarding animal, human, and environmental health through education, awareness, and scientific collaboration.
