Tungnath is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tunganath in Rudraprayag district. The Tunganath (literal meaning: Lord of the peaks) mountains form the Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys. It is located at an altitude of 3,680 m (12,073 ft), and just below the peak of Chandrashila. This shot is taken enroute Tunganath.

A few believe that it was the son of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya, who came here after losing a race to his brother Ganesha. He remained in a Samadhi for thousands of years.
It was Lord Shiva who tried to tempt his son by channelizing a stream of Kheer to bring him back. The actual meaning of the word Kheerganga is ‘milky white sacred water’. This is how the name Kheerganga came into existence
