Neonatal Jaundice

Neonatal jaundice is yellow discoloration of the skin and sclera due to increased bilirubin in newborns.

Causes:

Physiological jaundice
Hemolysis (ABO/Rh incompatibility)
Prematurity
Infection
Breastfeeding jaundice

Signs & Symptoms:

Yellow skin and sclera
Poor feeding
Lethargy
High-pitched cry (severe cases)
Phototherapy

Phototherapy is the treatment of choice for neonatal jaundice. Blue light converts unconjugated bilirubin into water-soluble form for excretion.

Nursing Care During Phototherapy
Monitor bilirubin level
Cover baby’s eyes
Expose maximum skin
Change position every 2 hours
Monitor temperature
Ensure adequate feeding/hydration
Observe for loose green stools
Check for skin rash/dehydration
Complications
Kernicterus (bilirubin encephalopathy)
Dehydration
Electrolyte imbalance
