We are conducting a short workshop for raising awareness about importance of peace and dignity of life through art of dramatics. It provides young minds an opportunity to generate awareness about crucial concept of peace as well as expressing it through art form. These children then take these experiences back to their peer groups and spread the message on their own. Thus art serves a huge purpose in spreading peace.

This wonderful opportunity is open to children between age 5 and 16.

'WHEN YOUR CHILD BECOMES YOUR TEACHER :)

This is by far the most beautiful part of parenting! Being taught by your child. I have numerous examples of this experience, one of the early ones being when I used to love sharing daily anecdotes about my 2 year old with my friends. This was mostly on the telephone or when we met....these were the prehistoric days of no facebook!

One day, my daughter, sitting on my lap, waited for me to complete the phone call and then with a frown on her face and a clear decision to admonish me, said, 'I do not like it'. I, completely lost, asked her, 'What do you not like?' She answered, 'I do not like it when you tell your friends about me'. I was still confused. I asked again, 'What part did you not like?' She answered, 'All parts'. I continued the conversation, 'So, you do not want me to tell my friends anything about you?' She said, 'No. Those are your's and my stories. I don't like you to tell them'.

It suddenly dawned on me that with her limited expressive ability, she was telling me to respect her privacy. Why should everyone need to know about her private life? And laugh at funny things that she did? She was telling me that she had self respect. And she did not appreciate my indiscriminate sharing of what was her's to decide, whether to share. I may be her mother, but I did not have ownership rights to her privacy.

I had two choices, to laugh this off as trivial and continue what I was doing - after all I was just fondly sharing her cuteness with others. How could that be wrong? Or I could respect her, and stop immediately and show her that I was sentitive to another's feelings, despite the fact that the other was much younger than me, the fact that I was the authority figure in her life and that she could not stop me from continuing to do that. I could show her that I cared, I understood and I learnt from her. That our relationship was one of mutual respect, understanding, communication and love.

And I did exactly that. She listened to me talking on the phone after that, I knew that she was listening intently, to know if I would follow through on my word and for how long. I kept my word. I was so proud of her. To be able to assert her feelings. I was so proud of our relationship - of sensitivity and respect. Mostly, of our communication. Which only got better. With this first brick - of the foundation of trust.
