Today’s newspaper once again brings out a harsh reality that most fire incidents in buildings are linked to electrical causes. But simply calling it a “short circuit” hides the real problem. From what we consistently observe on ground, these fires are rarely accidental—they are the result of systemic gaps such as fault loop impedance never being tested, oversized or incorrectly selected MCBs that fail to trip under overload, improper earthing and missing equipotential bonding, and a complete misunderstanding of protection philosophy, especially between TN-S and TT systems. On top of this, we see non-compliant lightning protection systems, absence or wrong selection of surge protection devices, and poor installation practices with almost no verification or testing. At the same time, Fire Department NOC processes are largely limited to visible systems—detection, suppression, means of egress, smoke extraction and pressurization. While these are critical, what often gets missed are the actual electrical risks that initiate the fire in the first place—fault loop impedance verification, protection coordination, proper earthing design, compliance with IEC 62305 for lightning protection, correct SPD coordination, cable sizing, conduit fill, and periodic testing. Fire safety cannot be reduced to detection and suppression alone. Unless the electrical system itself is properly designed, protected, and verified, the root cause of fire remains unaddressed. In that sense, a Fire NOC without a detailed electrical audit is, quite frankly, an incomplete safety clearance.
