Covid Isolation Ward, Churachandpur District Hospital

I'm the type to always steer clear of controversies, but what I've seen and observed in my now almost 2-weeks stay at the isolation ward deserves some attention. I'll desist from talking about the already popular issues about utilities (water, electric, etc)

PERSONAL CARE
There is no personal care. The medicines given to a healthy 25 year old with no health issues and a 75 year old with a laundry list of complications (BP, diabetes, etc) is the exact same. Even the dosage remains the same. Every. Single. Day. I think any sane person could imagine the outcome.

Anyone with half a brain could deduce the consequences such treatment could entail. The weak and fragile with prior complications cannot handle the 'standard medications', and if you stay long enough you could see the life being drained out of them day after day. This is not a story. They are somebody's dad or mom, and it could be yours as well.

MANPOWER
The authorities may provide fancy ratios to justify the situation but the ground reality tells a different story. We have 3 nurses per shift for 50+ patients, including the ICU. An emergency at one end of the ward means the rest gets ignored for hours. This is why you hear about emergency situations where there are no nurses and doctors.
About the doctors, the official story remains that there are doctors 24x7 but you would only see them for a minute or two during the daily rounds. Having an emergency at 11PM? You might have to wait a few hours for the nurses to arrive and one whole day for the doctor to arrive.

MEDICAL ETHICS
Our district hospital has dozens of highly qualified and experienced doctors and nurses but they are nowhere to be seen. They have been conditioned to believe that their monthly salary is a gift from the government as a thanksgiving for their qualifications, and they owe nothing to the public. Most of them leverage their public employment to lure patients to their own private clinics to mint money.

So who is treating the patients, you may ask. Its the contractual nurses and doctors, all of them very young and inexperienced, hired only to treat covid patients and to be thrown out the system the moment covid ceases to be a threat. We are thankful to these warriors, but where are the regulars?

To conlcude, its not that we are not thankful. We are. Most of the patient parties are too humble, too unaware, and too uneducated to even realise how they have been denied their right to life, their right to proper treatment and care. We are against the system. A few nurses and doctors may not be professional owing to their inexperience but most of them including the hardworking multi-tasking staff are extremely helpful and kind.

The public needs to understand that this hospital belongs to us and not the officials. We need to understand that we are paying for their salaries through our tax money everytime we buy anything from a chewing gum to a car. We need to understand that its our own brethren that are being denied proper care here. We need to understand that it is our collective responsibility to ensure that we have the best facilities and healthcare possible.
