Research Spotlight | IIM Kozhikode

Congratulations to Prof. Sthanu Nair (Economics) on his co-authored publication in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics (ABDC ‘A’).

The study, “Impact of Text Messages on Farmers' Adoption of Agriculture App and Its Effect on Farm Level Outcomes,” explores how simple behavioural nudges can drive meaningful change in agriculture.

Using a randomised controlled trial (RCT) the research examines the impact of periodic SMS reminders encouraging the use of a mobile-based agriculture applications (MPA).

Key insights:

-Text message nudges significantly boosted adoption, reflected in higher app installations and login activity

-However, they did not increase the total time spent on the app

-Using an instrumental variable approach, the study finds that greater engagement with the app led to better farm outcomes:

These findings highlight how low-cost behavioural interventions, such as SMS reminders, can accelerate the adoption and effective use of digital tools—ultimately improving market access and input efficiency for farmers.

The research offers valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners working at the intersection of behavioural science, technology, and agricultural development.
