This National Technology Day, we celebrate the spirit of innovation, the power of ideas and the people shaping the future through technology.
In a conversation with ET NOW, Shri Umesh Chowdhary, VC & MD, Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, spoke about the company’s strategic focus on strengthening its presence in the shipbuilding sector through its specialised subsidiary, Titagarh Naval Systems Limited. He highlighted how this expansion aligns with the Government of India’s vision of achieving self-reliance in shipbuilding, underscored by the recent successful launch of the Diving Support Craft A23 (YARD 328) for the Indian Navy.
He further outlined the INR 610 crore capex plan for a landmark expansion, which will significantly enhance the company’s defence, commercial, and export shipbuilding capabilities. The development of a modern shipyard in West Bengal was also highlighted as a key step in scaling operations and reinforcing India’s global maritime competitiveness.
Sharing his outlook, he expressed confidence in the segment’s growth trajectory, noting the facility’s potential to handle 16–18 specialised vessels annually. He added that this move is expected to unlock significant revenue opportunities, improve margins, and create long-term value towards positioning West Bengal as a premier hub for advanced naval manufacturing and national defence indigenisation.
