Announcement – State of the Internet

You would have all noticed that the internet everywhere in college has been very patchy for the previous couple of days. This was caused due to a minor explosion involving a power cable in the library server room, and independently some technical problems from the BSNL end. We have registered a complaint with BSNL and the college administration has patched up the cable. BSNL is currently engaged in efforts to permanently resolve the problem in their end. We hope that any lingering issues will be resolved within the next two days.

The second announcement is with respect to the state of affairs in the 6th floor of the girl’s hostel. The college installed a new switch in the floor last month but the problem is still not solved. We have repeatedly mentioned that we can identify the problem only if we have all the routers in that floor with us and we analyse the working of the network when no router is being used. Despite e-mails worded as clearly as possible with respect to the gravity of this situation, we got a total of three routers by our last deadline. We will collect routers for the last time this semester on Wednesday (11th April), 5.00 pm. If you are from the 6th floor, please ensure that all routers in your floor are handed over to the guard maashis. Post this deadline, we will NOT attempt to rectify any problem from the 6th floor till the beginning of the next semester. Please understand that we also have exams et al that we need to prepare for. If the residents of the 6th floor face any problem after Wednesday, please send a mail to [email protected]. Your complaint will be registered with the network administrator, Mr. Soumen. He sits in either the main server room in the library or room 226 of the Acad Block. Make sure you also tag the girl’s hostel warden in the mail.

Finally, we received suggestions on the possibility of installing a router in the girl’s hostel similar to the one placed in the library. We will actively consider the prospect of something along these lines next semester. However, based on our initial assessment, a large amount of wiring has to be done in the girls hostel in addition to buying additional hardware like extenders. This is owing to the fact that unlike the library, the number of walls in the hostel layout means that the router on its own covers barely a third of the floor. We will attempt to secure the cooperation of the administration in exploring the viability of the exercise and implementing the same, in the beginning of the next semester.
