WB SSC RECRUITMENT SCAM: A HUGE SETBACK FOR MAMATA BANERJEE GOVT. AS SUPREME COURT CANCELS APPOINTMENT OF 25,753 TEACHERS AND OTHER STAFF
April 03, 2025

In a big setback to the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government, the Supreme Court today upheld the Calcutta High Court order cancelling 25,753 appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in 2016 in connection with the school jobs for cash scam.

A Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjiv Kumar refused to interfere with the High Court decision after noting that the appointments were "vitiated by manipulation and fraud."

However, the Bench added that the candidates already appointed need not hand over the salary given so far and further ordered that fresh selection process should be completed within three months.

ADANI HIDENBURG CASE LIVE UPDATES: SC DIRECTS SEBI TO COMPLETE PROBE WITHIN THREE MONTHS
January 03, 2024

The Supreme Court today delivered its judgment on a bunch of petitions seeking an investigation into allegations of accounting fraud and stock manipulation against Adani group companies, published in a research report by US short-seller Hindenburg Research in January 2023.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud pronounced the verdict in the case that was reserved on November 24 after the conclusion of the arguments.

The top court said that cannot enter into the domain of the regulatory regime and that the report by Hindenburg “or anything like that” cannot become the basis of a separate probe.

It also directed the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to go ahead, continue its probe as per the law, and deliver its report within three months.

CONTRASTING VIEWS RECEIVED FROM JUDGES IN HIJAB VERDICT REGARDING FRATERNITY AND DISCIPLINE
October 14, 2022

An interesting aspect of the hijab case judgment of the Supreme Court is the contrasting, if not diametrically opposite, views expressed by Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia regarding the concepts of fraternity, diversity and discipline.

While Justice Gupta is of the opinion that allowing religious headscarf in the classroom will fragment the concept of fraternity, Justice Dhulia expressed that it can expose students to diversity and enable them to inculcate tolerance towards religious and cultural differences.
