A New Year, in any culture, is always a happy occasion with new beginnings and celebrations galore to welcome the new year. A Bengali New Year too is associated with fresh starts and festivities. In its colonial past, Bengal used to be a province in the eastern part of India, which was divided by the British into West Bengal —a state in the Eastern part of India—and Bangladesh—a separate country. While in neighboring Bangladesh, the day is celebrated with great vigor and pomp and show, in Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta), the capital of West Bengal, a Bengali New Year is a joyous occasion with a personal touch. We are welcoming our 1429th New Year today.

The International Day of Forests is observed by the United Nations on March 21. The day commemorate the green cover across the planet highlighting its importance. The day was observed under the theme– “Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being”.
